Weekly Update: A book in review

Posted in Update at 2:36 am by Geoff

I have not been writing new content for the book this week, only reviewing what has already been written. I have to say, that I am happy with about half of it. The other half needs some work but not much. After spending so much time away from the project, it’s like I can come back with fresh eyes and can see what works and what doesn’t. I wish I was done with a draft by now, as I should have been, but I am encouraged with what I wrote and it should not take much effort to go through and change the things I don’t like.

Blog undergoing maintenance

Posted in General at 6:25 am by Geoff

The blog template I created has an error where comments do not register. Considering the large amount of tiny little files I had to meticulously copy and paste into organized files, I’m surprised it worked as well as it did. But until I can root out the original problem and correct it, the site is going to look a little different as I use temporary placeholder templates. But you should be able to post comments now to any post and under the feedback icon found on the right (until the old template is restored, in which case it’ll be at the top). Thank you for your patience and I hope to see some comments!

A long hiatus comes to end

Posted in General at 7:56 am by Geoff

I have been utterly silent these last couple of months. The last update was early August. I apologize but due to a serious car accident that happened in mid-August, I have taken a long break from my writing. My brother and I were hit by a drunk driver while in Alabama for a wedding. My brother had several broken bones (which are now, thankfully, healing) and I had some head trauma, which induced some temporary amnesia and for several months I had trouble piecing together thoughts. It was not a condition in which I could effectively write. But now I have taken a long enough break and am ready and eager to continue work on The Gun Republic. I hope you’ll excuse my absence. In the weeks to come I will be releasing less previews than I had before and more status updates. I will get a preview to you all when I can but for now, I am focused on continuing forward with Chapter Seven, and reviewing the first act. Thank you.

Sunday Preview Week 5: Chapter List

Posted in Preview at 1:54 am by Geoff

I’m not sure if the word ‘official’ is quite right for the list of chapters I am putting after the break. This is in part because I am not a decided that these are the final names for the chapters and another part is that I’m not entirely sure if I am even going to use them or leave the chapters unnamed. However, the more time I put into naming the darn things the more I think they fit the story. Moreover, I felt that they provide an interesting preview of the book, as a sort of vague summary.

Sunday Preview Week 4: the Song of the Lion

Posted in Preview at 9:47 pm by Geoff

This week, I shall be sharing with you an excerpt from the first book of The Song of the Lion, written by Aulus Marconius in the year 941 APR. It is about the Lion Warrior, who was a Runaran General in the Gala War, which lasted from 810 to 815. This war was almost lost by the Republic but the invention of guns tipped the balance in the end. The Lion Warrior went on to hate the new weapon and revolted against the Republic, forming his own rogue state and sparking the The Lion War. The song was written in nine books and the first of these served as a summary of the events. The excerpt from this initial book covers the Gala War, the first half of the Lion Warrior’s harrowing story.

Aulus Marconius grew up as a scribe in the patra districts, working for the Samati, a leading conservative family in the Senate who viewed the Lion Warrior as a symbol of purity and honor. Learning of these stories from his patrons, he became inspired and used his creative abilities to write the work, which became one of the Republic’s most renowned songs.

You can read the excerpt after the break.

Wednesday Update Week 3: the late edition

Posted in Update at 1:03 am by Geoff

It’s Thursday, and I haven’t updated this week yet. Sorry about that. I’ve been really busy with Chapter Seven and the query letters I’ll be sending out next week. I hope you all enjoyed the preview on Sunday and I have something special planned for this coming Sunday.

Chapter Seven begins with one of the major inciting incidents of the second act. I don’t want to go into too much detail but I can say that it is coming along pretty well. I am happy with it, mostly. I’ve been in kind of a funk with the change of pace from act one so it’ll take a little while to readjust.

So far Chapter Seven is about 4,000 words and SHOULD be finished by Sunday.

Sunday Preview Week 3: Runaran Mythology and the Fall of the Gods

Posted in Preview at 5:50 pm by Geoff

This week I have for you a very special preview. The mythology behind the Republic of Runar is very important to understanding the culture and background of the story’s setting. A map would be helpful to keep you oriented but, alas, I do not have one ready. So I shall instead have to give you a quick reference of places.

On the southern coast of Helna, there are two peninsulas next to each other. The eastern and larger one is Greckana. The western and smaller one is Ilata. Gosara is a Greckani colony just north of Ilata and Truscana is a land in the northwest part of the peninsula. Further references on larger history, geography, and civilizations can be found in the Sunday Preview Week 1 and Week 2.

Wednesday Update Week 2: Chapter 6 complete

Posted in Update at 1:41 am by Geoff

I spent about nine hours working on Chapter Six yesterday and got it finished. I am very happy with it and very excited to get earnestly into Chapter Seven, which I started but haven’t gotten very far yet. Chapter Six establishes the main political rivalry of the second act and how the economy of the city is beginning to fail.

I also worked on revising my query letter, which I shall send out next week. Things are going very well and hopefully by this time next week I’ll be well into Chapter Eight.

As it stands now Chapter Seven is 500 words long and should be finished by Sunday.

Sunday Update Week 2: Chapter 6 almost finished (36%)

Posted in Update at 1:30 am by Geoff

I have had a busy week with traveling and getting sick. But today I spent a considerable amount of time on Chapter Six and it is nearly finished. I missed the deadline but I plan on working extra hard next week to get both Chapter Six and Seven completed by next Sunday.

The reunion of Lucius and his family happens at the beginning of Chapter Six and the rest follows him trying to get back on his feet now that he’s returned from the war. Also, there is a Senate session regarding two generals.

So far I am very happy with how this chapter is going and now that I got back into the groove of things I am going to continue writing into the night.

As it stands now the first draft is 36% complete with about 55,000 words.

Sunday Preview Week 2: calendar and the ancient civilizations

Posted in Preview at 9:43 pm by Geoff

I’ve got a hefty preview for you all this week. You can read after the break about not only how the years are counted in days, weeks, and months, but also an overview of the three great ancient civilizations, precursors to the Republic of Runar.
